Arkansas has about 15,800 registered sex offenders — 526 offenders for every 100,000 residents — the second-highest total in the country based on population, recent national research shows.
The manager of the state’s sex-offender registry says the numbers are misleading.
“It’s not like we have 16,000 sex offenders roaming loose around Arkansas,” said Paula Stitz. “It’s more like 9,000.”
… there are 16,049 people registered in Arkansas’ sex-offender database, Stitz said. Of those, more than 3,100 are incarcerated, about 3,400 are now outside the state, and 176 offenders have been deported…
Good article. I love articles where the journalist inserts actual and true data, even if that’s not the main focus of the article.
Also, this article adds credence to what some here have surmised regarding half the states not taking people of the registry, even if they are no longer living in the state. The more people they can keep on their, the more funding they can receive from Fed and/or state.
Between articles like this and many of it’s positive comments, and especially how many people were appalled by what Olivia Munn did in Predator (I have almost no respect left for her at this point), it’s really feeling like the tied is starting to turn more and more towards the public realizing how wrong the registry is and how people on it are being treated.
Maybe it’s that the sun is shining where I am today, or that I slept somewhat well, but I’m feeling good and positive.
…”based on analysis conducted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children…” Need I say more?
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is elevating the numbers but the manager of the state’s sex-offender registry is saying the numbers are lower… why? Money? Tourism? Taxes? Take your pick.
There’s so much wrong with this article; too much to comment on.
